Up 16 Back to Cairns Prev Next Slideshow

After our Cape York experience with heavy rain over the last few days, we heard that Cairns had rain for almost two weeks. In spite of that, there was not a lot of water over Barron Falls; great Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail rides though. Leaving Cairns and starting our journey toward home, we had a stop off in the old sugar cane town of Gordonvale. Gordonvale is a charming small town that has seen almost no modernisation. There was some activity at the mill preparing for the cane harvest, but it has been delayed because of the late wet weather. The heavy harvesting machinery does too much damage to the cane fields if the ground is too soft, so they now have to wait for it to dry before harvesting can start.
