| After the discovery of gold in 1871 Charters Towers soon turned into a bustling metropolis, which in its heyday boasted being the second largest city in Queensland. Many of the magnificent buildings in the town, particularly the banks, were built in the 1880's when it was at it's economic peak. 65 hotels were built to satisfy the miners thirsts.
