| Derby (pop 5000) is located on King Sound, near the mouth of the Fitzroy River. The town was gazetted in 1883 and provided early port facilities for the shipping of cattle and pearl shell - until the invention of plastic, Derby supplied most of the World's pearl shell for the manufacture of buttons. |
