| William Dampier was the first European to visit this shore in 1688 and Roebuck Bay was named after his ship, H.M.S. Roebuck. Broome - (pop 16,000) was established to support the early pearling industry and consequently it has a most interesting 'frontier town' history. Its beautiful waterfront and harbour face the deep blue of the Indian Ocean. In the same year as Derby, Broome was gazetted in 1883. Check our diary for some more of Broome's interesting history. |
