For such a large geographic region, the Pilbara has a relatively short coastline - the reasonably accessible part is even shorter. In anticipation of catching the full effect of the 'Staircase To The Moon' we spent our next week or so around the most interesting Karratha/Roebourne/Dampier region. Karratha was established as recently as 1968 in response to the demands of the Hamersley Iron and is the administrative centre for the region. Dampier is a major industrial port in the northwest of Western Australia. The Dampier Port is part of the Dampier Archipelago, servicing petrochemical, salt, iron ore and natural gas export industries
