Up Lightning Ridge Prev Next Slideshow

Lightning Ridge is the second of Australia's Opal mining towns. We decided to spend a few days here at the "Ridge" after seeing how the Opal miners work and live in Coober Pedy. In a similar way to Coober Pedy, almost all mining has now shifted many kilometres from the town area. The evidence of all the old mining is still everywhere though, including old camps/ mine shafts/ machinery/ and many piles of waste rock (tailings). After Lightning Ridge, we drive the 800km home through western Queensland over the next 2 days
