| In NSW, our first stop is Bourke, a big outback town located on the banks of the Darling River. Famous for historical buildings and for being mentioned in Henry Lawson poetry. In 1835 the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell built a fort in the area which he named Fort Bourke in honour of the governor of NSW, Sir Richard Bourke. If you want ‘outback’ you’ll find it at Bourke, as the Australian expression ‘Back ‘o Bourke’ means about as far as you can go. The town was once an important port on the Darling River with wool from all across western New South Wales and south western Queensland being transported by bullock wagons and shipped down the river to South Australia. . Next we traveled to Cobar. Cobar township includes small villages at Euabalong, Mount Hope and Nymagee and the Shire is predominantly rural area mainly used for agriculture (mostly sheep grazing), and for mining – copper, lead, gold, silver and zinc. |
