Ire1-Battle of the Boyne-2.jpg=This battle can be considered to be the start of the factional bitterness between Loyalists (Catholic) and Republican (Protestant) factions. The Battle of the Boyne was fought in 1690 between two rival claimants of the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones – the Catholic King James and the Protestant King William (who had deposed James in 1688) – across the River Boyne near Drogheda on the east coast of Ireland. The battle, won by William, ultimately helped ensure the continuation of Protestant ascendancy in Ireland.

The Troubles was a period of ethno-political conflict in Northern Ireland which spilled over at various times into England, the Republic of Ireland, and mainland Europe. The duration of the Troubles is conventionally dated from the late 1960s and considered by many to have ended with the Belfast "Good Friday" Agreement of 1998. However, sporadic violence has continued since then and there is no sign that the walls can be removed.
